Chrysalis represents an intermediate state of being - partially bound to the past yet still having the freedom to form a future.
My work explores this transient state through the tensions between traditional and experimental printmaking techniques. The interdisciplinary advantage of mixing handiwork with technology allows me to blur the line between art and science. Simultaneously, the delicate suspended nature of my work forces the viewer to consider their own fragile existence in the present time.
I draw from technical experiences in printmaking, sculpture, and sewing and aesthetic interests in biology, technology, and fashion design to create works that explore the dialogue between tradition and innovation, the natural and artificial, and the abstract and concrete.
My practice is also a reflection of who I am existing between fields of study (as a computational biology/art double major), cultures (my Vietnamese/ Salvadoran heritage), societal expectations (as a first-generation college student and woman), and life stages (childhood and adulthood).
Chrysalis questions how we can inhabit the intermediate spaces in an ever-polarizing world before embodying who we are meant to become.
